Pain Management with Essential OilsWhether exercising or simply planting your Spring garden, essential oils can help to soothe your muscles–before or after your hard work. Many people use pain killers to cure muscle aches, but these can take a toll on your liver and kidneys. Instead, consider essential oils as a great way to keep your muscles healthy.  You can often find blends of oils that will specifically address muscle concerns, or you can fix your own. For some of the must-have oils to help muscles perform well, read on.

Soothing Blends

For muscle health, look to blends of oils that work together well and provide a pleasant cooling sensation.  Using essential oils for good muscle health, instead of over-the-counter muscle rubs, means no greasy residue or oil stains on your clothes.

Blending certain essential oils cause them to work together as the perfect soothing blend, and the comforting effects can be felt immediately. Apply before and after exercise or after a long day of hard work.

Wintergreen

You are likely well acquainted with wintergreen’s smell as many over the counter muscle rubs contain menthol. However, the minty aroma serves more than just olfactory purposes. Wintergreen’s invigorating scent and cooling relief help muscles feel like new.

Camphor

Camphor is another ingredient to consider blending.  You’ve likely used it before since numerous muscle rubs employ camphor to relieve minor muscle and joint soreness.

Peppermint

Peppermint Oil is a versatile essential oil, which works great when applied topically. Peppermint has a cooling effect much like camphor, helping tired muscles feel rejuvenated.

Blue Tansy

Blue Tansy Oil supports your body’s natural response to stress and irritation, helping you to relax. A point of note: do not confuse Blue Tansy Oil with Tansy Oil as the latter is highly toxic.

Blue Chamomile

This essential oil is soothing and comforting to muscles and joints.

Helichrysum

What sets Helichrysum Oil apart from the other analgesic essential oils is its ability to comfort skin.

Osmanthus

A traditional flower of China, this essential oil is meant to promote relaxation and calm the mind. By helping you relax and unwind, Osmanthus Oil allows the other soothing  oils to do their job.

How to Apply Essential Oils for Muscles

Essential oils can make a variety of muscles feel healthier, so finding the best way to apply them is important.  Here are some options:

Rubs

If you are looking to cover a large area of your body such as your quads, lower back, then a rub may be the best option for you. You can create the blend you want and add it to the lotion of your choice for easy application.

Roll-On Applicator

Using muscle blends in a roll-on applicator is the perfect solution for on-the-spot treatment. Simply roll it across the area in need of energizing for easy application.

Concentrated Oil

Muscle blends are often available in concentrated form. To use, simply dilute with a carrier oil before applying topically.
